May 31, 2009 Healdsburg Jazz Festival
Stars of Brazil - Concert on the Green
With Toninho Horta with Santi Debriano, Billy Hart and special guest Airto. Trio De Paz with Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta and Dudeka Da Fonseca, http://triodapaz.com/ and Leny Andrade with the Stephanie Ozer Quartet plus a Samba band tba.
As citizens of a vast, diverse, continent-sized nation, Brazilians are united by several powerfully binding passions: samba, soccer, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. This afternoons concert offers a generous helping of two out of three, and who knows, maybe a futbol game will break out on the lawn. The event is essentially a mini-festival of Brazilian music featuring some of the countrys greatest musicians, with a special focus on the vast treasure trove of tunes written by Jobim, one of the 20th centurys most revered composers.
On a scene bursting with sumptuously talented singers, Leny Andrade has long stood out in Brazil with her warm, burnished contralto and her lithe, flowing phrasing. A worthy successor to Elis Regina's throne, Andrade is widely hailed as Brazil's greatest living jazz singer, a gifted improviser who combines bossa novas luscious melodic sensibility with a compelling sense of swing. At the peak of powers, the Rio de Janeiro native won a Latin Grammy Award in 2007 for her ravishing duo CD Ao Vivo with pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano.
Guitarist Toninho Horta is a gifted improviser who has been a major force since he emerged in the early 1970s as part of Milton Nascimentos Minas Gerais collective Clube da Esquina. His influence spread far beyond Brazil during the 1980s when he lived in New York, inspiring American artists such as Pat Metheny, who declared that Hortas melodies stay with you for days. Youre sure youve heard them before, but theyre brand new. For his Healdsburg performance, Horta brings an extraordinary rhythm section featuring Panamanian-born bass master Santi Debriano, drum innovator Billy Hart, and special guest Airto Moreira, a percussion giant whose career highlights include classic recordings with Miles Davis, a founding stint with Weather Report, and hit albums with his wife, vocalist Flora Purim.
Trio De Paz is an all-star New York ensemble uniting three of Brazil's finest jazz musicians, guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, who have honed a gorgeous repertoire of Brazilian standards and modern jazz tunes.

Stephanie was written up in
Keyboard Magazine (www.keyboardmag.com)
as Unsigned Artist of the Month, November issue, 2005. "Stephanie's own
composition, 'Bronx to Brasil' is a standout..." "Close your eyes, listen to
Leny's and Stephanie's collaboration on the opening track, 'Meu Pais', and feel
the breeze off of Ipanema Beach."
"For her album, "O Começo: New Beginnings in Brazilian Jazz", Sonoma based
pianist-composer Stephanie Ozer went to Rio (and Berkeley) to record with the
renowned Leny Andrade, who does four songs. Ozer is an exquisite talent who
evokes the influences of Manfredo Fest and others." (Chuy Varela,
writer and host of KCSM's "Brazilian Nights on the Bay,
San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday, August 21, 2005. This was part of
Chuy's article surveying Brazilian music in the Bay Area, "Brazilian Pulse
Pounds the Bay Area". )
"...the CD, a romantic album of bossas and sambas ... eloqently displays Ozer's
tasteful piano style....eloquent and precise...strong rhythmic approach with
subtle harmony...sensitive accompanist...especially strong rapport with
guitarist Randy Vincent.. " (Forrest Bryant,
All About Jazz, Sept 1, 2005.)
"I was knocked out by this CD. The choice of tunes, the playing, the singing all
very fun to listen to. When I can put a CD in my car and listen to it over and
over - I call that a find. Stephanie's musical sensibility is very artistic and
multidimensional within a genre that I love." (Stephanie Bruce -
international jazz vocalist, composer and educator.)
"Stephanie Ozer is a very talented and inspired pianist who has infused her
musicality with the Brazilian vibe. Her choice of material, good harmonic taste
and sensitive interpretations are a joy to listen to. She has captured the
rhythmic drive of samba without losing her beautiful touch at the keys. I
totally recommend "O Começo" to all listeners..." - Jovino Santos Neto,
Pianist, Composer, Musicologist
"Pianist-composer Stephanie Ozer...is an exquisite talent..." - Jesse
Chuy Varela , SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE; host of KCSM "Brazilian nights on the
bay"
